Custom build or a subscription agent.
A subscription agent is installed on the vendor’s platform in days and billed monthly. A custom build is written into your own tools and account in about 14 days and owned outright. The right one depends on how specific your workflow is and whether leaving matters.
Side by side.
Terms as published in October 2026. No prices: every KYN build is quoted on scope, and platform plans change.
| Subscription agent (Volty, Respond.io, WATI type) | KYN custom build | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the system | The vendor. You rent the platform; the automations and history stay on it. | You. Code and data in a cloud account in your name; rights on full payment. |
| Where it runs | Inside the vendor’s console, connected to some of your tools. | Inside your mailbox, CRM, WhatsApp and books. |
| Time to live | Days. A trial can start the same week. | About 14 days once scope, access and integrations are settled. |
| Fit to the workflow | The platform’s workflow, configured. | Built to the workflow as it is, including the odd steps. |
| What the agent does alone | Varies; most ship with a draft mode and a go-live switch per inbox. | Reads, drafts, sorts, reminds, reports. Outbound, money, filings wait for a person. |
| Run cost | A monthly plan sized by usage; seats and contacts often unlimited. | Model and messaging fees per unit at list prices, hosting at cost, published on the build library. |
| Changing it | Settings in the console; anything outside them is a feature request. | A message to us under the retainer, or your team edits the code. |
| Leaving | Export what the platform allows; rebuild the automations elsewhere. | Nothing to leave. Remove our role; everything keeps running. |
| Languages | The agent answers in many languages; the console is English. | English, Chinese, Bahasa in the product and the site. |
Which one, when.
- KYN custom build
- Your process has steps no platform anticipates.
- Enquiries must land in your own CRM and books, not a vendor inbox.
- Procurement asks where the data lives and who can remove the vendor.
- You want the per-unit cost stated and owned.
- Subscription agent (Volty, Respond.io, WATI type)
- The workflow is standard: answer WhatsApp, broadcast, tag leads.
- You want it this week and can live inside the console.
- A monthly plan is simpler to approve than a build fee.
- Leaving later is an acceptable cost.
Questions buyers ask
Is a custom build always better than a subscription agent?
- No. A standard workflow on a good platform is cheaper to start and live in days. A custom build wins when the workflow is specific, the data must stay in your own systems, or ownership and leaving matter. Many businesses run both: a platform for the shop floor, a build for the back office.
Can a subscription agent connect to our accounting system?
- Some connect to common CRMs, calendars and shops through named connectors; accounting, purchasing and payroll are rarer. A custom build connects to whatever has an API or an export, inside your account.
How long does a custom build take compared with a trial?
- A platform trial starts in days. A KYN build reaches production in about 14 days once scope, access and integrations are settled, and is yours from then on.
What happens to a subscription agent’s history if we leave?
- What the vendor exports. Conversation history and automations usually stay on the platform; plan for a rebuild if you move. A custom build has nothing to leave.
