How to Get a Business Website Cited by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews

What AI answer engines quote, which page structure gets cited, how question headings and FAQ schema help, how to measure citations and how often to update. Checked October 2026.

A growing share of buyers ask an AI assistant before they search. ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and the assistants built into browsers answer the question directly and cite a handful of pages. Being one of those pages is the new version of ranking first. The work to get there overlaps with search optimisation, but it is not the same.

What do AI answer engines quote?

Answer engines assemble a response from pages they have retrieved for the query. They favour passages that:

  • Answer a specific question directly, in the first sentence under a heading.
  • State facts with a date, a number or a named source.
  • Come from a page that covers the topic fully rather than mentioning it.
  • Are recent, or carry a visible checked date.
  • Are from a site that has several pages on the same topic.

They do not quote marketing. "Our solution transforms your business" is never cited. "From 1 October 2026 the platform charges per message after 1,000 replies a month" is cited, because it is an answer.

Which page structure gets cited?

The structure that works for answer engines is the one a careful reader would want anyway.

  • A short summary at the top: three bullet points stating the answer.
  • Headings that are the questions people ask, in their words.
  • One direct answer sentence under each heading, then the detail.
  • Lists and short tables for comparisons.
  • A frequently asked questions section with three to five questions and plain answers.
  • A line at the end stating when the page was checked.
  • Internal links to the site's other pages on the topic.

A 900-word page built this way is cited more often than a 3,000-word page that buries the answer.

How do question headings and FAQ schema help?

Question headings match the way queries are phrased to an assistant. "How much does a business website cost in Singapore?" as an H2 is a direct match for the question a buyer types. A heading like "Pricing" is not.

FAQ schema (FAQPage in JSON-LD) marks each question and answer so that both search engines and answer engines can extract the pair without parsing the page. It also makes the page eligible for expanded results in Google. From our own builds, every article carries Article schema and FAQPage schema generated from its FAQ section, and the question headings are allowed on articles specifically because retrieval matches them.

Keep the answer in the HTML, not behind a click. An accordion that loads the answer only when opened gives the engine nothing to read.

How do you measure citations?

Rankings are visible in Search Console. Citations are not, so they have to be measured directly.

  • Write a list of the questions a buyer would ask about your service, 30 to 50 of them.
  • Run each one through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google with AI Overviews on a schedule, weekly or fortnightly.
  • Record which domains are cited for each question, including competitors.
  • Track your share of citations over time and which pages earn them.
  • Feed the gaps back into the content plan: a question where competitors are cited and you are not is the next article.

From our own builds: a loop of 50 prompts runs against the engines, counts citations per domain, and writes the findings into a ledger that decides what gets written next. Without measurement, AI visibility is a feeling.

How often should pages be checked and updated?

Answer engines prefer recent pages and visibly dated facts. A page that was right last year and says nothing about this year loses to one that says "checked this month".

  • Review every page with citations or impressions monthly. Update facts, prices and dates. Move the checked line.
  • Add new questions to the FAQ as the measurement loop finds them.
  • Never delete a page that is cited. Improve it at the same URL.
  • Publish new pages on the questions where you are not yet cited, at a steady pace, rather than in bursts.

Being cited is a property of the website as a whole: its structure, its schema, its speed and its publishing rhythm. It is easier to achieve when the site is built for it from the start and the content engine runs on the same system. See organic search and AI search handled with the build.

Frequently asked questions

Does being cited by ChatGPT bring traffic?

Less than a top Google ranking, but it brings qualified traffic and it shapes which companies a buyer shortlists before they search at all.

Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers?

Allow them if you want to be cited. Each engine has a named crawler; blocking it in robots.txt removes the site from that engine's answers.

Can a small site compete with large publishers for citations?

Yes, on specific questions. Engines cite the page that answers the exact question most directly, and large publishers rarely write the Singapore-specific version.
