The most reliable public pay data for Singapore finance and operations roles is the Ministry of Manpower's occupational wage tables, which list median and percentile gross monthly wages for more than 500 occupations. We do not reproduce salary figures here, because they change each year and the tables are the source. This article shows how to read them, what they leave out, and how to compare the cost of a hire with the cost of automating the work.
Where do reliable salary figures come from?
Start with MOM's Occupational Wages 2025 tables. The page states that the data cover full-time resident employees, reference June 2025, and are available as basic and gross wages excluding bonuses. The downloadable spreadsheets give the median, 25th and 75th percentiles by occupation.
Three limits apply to that data.
- Residents only. The tables cover full-time resident employees. Work-pass holders are outside the scope.
- Bonuses excluded. A 13th-month payment or a performance bonus does not appear.
- A reference month. June 2025 pay is not 2027 pay. Wages move.
Recruiter salary guides are the second source. They reflect asking and offered pay for new hires, which can sit above the median for people already in the job. Treat them as a view on the hiring market, not as a view on your payroll.
How do you read a median and a percentile range?
The median is the middle value: half of the people in the occupation earn more, half less. The 25th and 75th percentiles bracket the middle half.
Use them like this:
- Below the 25th percentile. Expect a junior hire or a thin job scope. Check turnover.
- Median. A fair offer for a competent, experienced person doing the standard role.
- Above the 75th percentile. A person with a wider scope than the title implies, or a scarce skill.
Match on the work, not the title. A "finance manager" at a 12-person firm often does the work of a bookkeeper, a credit controller and a part-time FP&A analyst. The occupation closest in task may be a different line in the table.
What does a hire cost beyond the salary?
Salary is the largest line, not the only one. For a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, employer cost includes CPF. For employees aged 55 and below earning above $750 a month, CPF Board lists the employer rate at 17% and the employee rate at 20%, from 1 January 2026. CPF applies only up to the Ordinary Wage ceiling, which reached $8,000 a month in 2026.
For a quick cost model, add these to base pay:
- employer CPF at the rate for the employee's age and residency;
- any bonus you commit to, such as a 13th month;
- leave, medical and insurance benefits;
- software seats and equipment;
- recruiting cost, either agency fees or management time;
- the months a new person takes to reach full output.
Line 6 is the one founders skip. A hire who takes four months to reach full output costs four months of partial work and the manager time to train them.
When is a hire the wrong answer?
A hire fits a job that needs judgement, relationships or accountability that must sit with a person. A hire fits poorly a job that is repetitive, rule-based and high-volume, such as matching bank lines, posting supplier bills, chasing invoices at fixed intervals or compiling a daily report.
Use this test on any role you plan to open:
| Question | If yes | |---|---| | Does the role spend more than half its time on repeated, rule-based steps? | Automate those steps first, then re-scope the role | | Does the role need a signature, a negotiation or a relationship? | Hire | | Is the volume growing faster than headcount can follow? | Automate the volume, hire for the exceptions | | Is the work seasonal? | Automate the peak; do not hire to the peak |
This is a judgement, not a rule. For a fuller treatment see our comparison of automation versus hiring for a Singapore SME.
How do you compare the two costs?
Compare 12-month cost to 12-month cost.
Hire: base pay plus employer CPF, bonus, benefits, equipment and recruiting, over twelve months.
Automate: a one-off build fee, plus a monthly retainer, plus per-unit running cost. Per-unit costs are small. In KYN's live systems a reconciled-report message costs about S$0.05 and a sorted reply about S$0.01. These depend on the model and text length.
Then ask what each option removes. A hire adds a person and the capacity of one person. An automated system adds capacity for the repeated work only, and leaves the judgement work with your existing team. They are not like-for-like, which is why the question is "what work remains afterwards", not "which is cheaper".
A worked structure, with no figures: if the role spends 60% of its time on rule-based steps, automating those steps frees 60% of an existing person. The hire you needed may become a half-role, a promotion for the person you have, or no hire.
Which roles are hardest to price in Singapore?
Operations roles vary the most because the title covers very different work: warehouse coordination, procurement, customer service, project delivery. Check at least two MOM occupation lines before setting a range. For finance, the spread between bookkeeper, accountant and finance manager is wide, and the right line depends on whether the person owns reporting and tax or only posts entries.
How often should you revisit pay data?
Once a year, at planning time, and again before any offer. MOM publishes new occupational tables annually, with a reference month and a release date, so the figure you used last year is already out of date. Record the table year next to any range you write into a hiring plan.
Also keep a short internal record of what you pay each role against the percentile it sits at. If your two bookkeepers sit at the 30th and 70th percentile for the same task, you have a retention risk or a scope difference to explain. Both are easier to resolve before a resignation than after it.
One rule of thumb applies across roles: set the range before you interview, not after you meet a candidate you like. A range set after the fact bends to the person, and the next hire pays for it.
Where KYN fits
KYN does not set or advise on salaries. We build the systems that take repeated finance and operations work off a team's desk. Examples: bills read from Gmail into a ledger, receivables chased at 3, 14 and 30 days, and department reports sent by WhatsApp each morning.
The first 14 days are a review of your stack and interviews with the team, which shows how much of a role is rule-based work. A full build ships in under 90 days. Pricing is a one-off build fee and a monthly retainer of at least twelve months, quoted after the review. See operations and finance.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find the median salary for an accountant in Singapore?
Open the MOM Occupational Wages tables and download the spreadsheet for the latest year. It lists median, 25th and 75th percentile gross monthly wages by occupation for full-time residents, excluding bonuses.
Do MOM wage tables include foreign employees?
No. The tables cover full-time resident employees. If you hire on a work pass, use a recruiter guide as a cross-check and expect different ranges.
Is automating a role cheaper than hiring?
Sometimes. It depends on how much of the role is rule-based and how large the volume is. Compare twelve-month cost for both options, and compare the work that remains afterwards, not only the price.
