Four buying signals work well for a small team selling to businesses: a company hiring for a role your product supports, a company that has just raised funds, a tender it has won or published, and a new office or entity. Each is public, dated and checkable. An agent can watch them and write a one-line record with a source link. A person decides whether to contact the account and approves the message.
This article ranks the four by how reliably they predict a need, says where to read each, and sets out what an agent should and should not conclude.
What is a buying signal?
A buying signal is a dated, public event that changes whether a company needs what you sell. It is not a guess about intent and not a score from a black box. If you cannot point to the page where it appeared, it is not a signal.
Two properties make a signal usable:
- It is specific. "Hiring a finance manager" is specific. "Growing fast" is not.
- It is fresh. A signal loses value with time. A hiring post from 11 months ago says little about this quarter.
Signals do not tell you the company will buy. They tell you when a conversation is relevant. That is the whole claim.
Which signal predicts a need most reliably?
Ranked by how directly each links to a need, for a seller of operations or finance systems to SMEs. This is a judgement based on how the need arises, not a measured result.
| Rank | Signal | Why it points to a need | Source | Lifespan | |---|---|---|---|---| | 1 | Hiring for a role your product supports | A manual process has hit its limit | Careers page, job boards | 30 to 60 days | | 2 | A new office, branch or entity | New systems, new compliance, new staff | Registry, company site, press | 90 days | | 3 | A tender won or published | Delivery capacity and reporting needed | Government tender portals | Until award plus delivery start | | 4 | Funding raised | Budget exists, growth plans follow | Company announcement, registry filings | 60 to 90 days |
Lifespans are working defaults. Set your own after you see how long replies keep coming from each type.
How do you use hiring as a signal?
Hiring is the strongest and the easiest to read. A company advertising for an accounts executive, a warehouse coordinator or a customer service lead is telling you which process is under strain.
Where to read it:
- the company's own careers page;
- national job boards, such as MyCareersFuture in Singapore.
What the agent records: role title, posting date, location, the first two responsibilities listed, and the URL. It matches the responsibilities to your offer. "Reconcile bank statements monthly" matches a reconciliation product. "Manage stock" matches inventory.
What it should not conclude: that the company will replace the hire with software. Often it will not. The signal opens a conversation about the workload, not a sale.
How do you use funding and new entities?
A funding announcement means budget and a growth plan. A new office, branch or registered entity means new setup work.
Sources:
- the company's own press page and social posts;
- registry records for a new entity: ACRA in Singapore, SSM in Malaysia, the Companies Registry in Hong Kong, AHU in Indonesia. See company data sources for Southeast Asia;
- exchange announcements for listed companies, such as SGX company announcements.
Take care with funding. Announcements are often about the amount, with little on use. An agent should record the date, the amount if stated, and the stated use, and mark the use "not stated" when it is absent. Never infer that money will go to your category.
How do you use tenders?
A tender won by an SME creates delivery work. A tender published by a buyer shows what they intend to purchase. These are two different signals for two different sellers.
In Singapore, public-sector tenders appear on GeBIZ. Awards are published, so an agent can watch for suppliers in your target segment who have just won work. A supplier that has won a contract needs capacity, reporting and often a compliance trail.
An agent should record the awarding agency, the title, the award date and the URL. It should not guess the contract value if the portal does not show it.
For Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia, each government runs its own procurement portals with their own access rules. Check each before you build a watcher, and respect the terms of use.
How should an agent act on a signal?
The agent does three things and stops.
- Watches. It checks your target accounts against the sources on a schedule. Hiring weekly. Registry and exchange announcements daily. Tenders when the portal updates.
- Writes a record. Account, signal type, date, one-line description, source URL, and the match to your offer. An unmatched signal is stored but not surfaced.
- Queues a draft. For matched signals, it writes a first line built on the signal. The draft waits for a person.
Example first line: "Saw your careers page lists an accounts executive to handle monthly reconciliations. We build tools that remove that step. Open to a short call?" A reader can click the careers page and verify it in five seconds.
Keep the sequence short and the claim specific. See how to research a lead with an agent for the record format.
What are the failure modes?
- Stale signal. The posting is closed. The agent should check that the page still loads and the role is still open.
- Wrong entity. Two companies share a name. Match on registration number.
- Over-reading. Funding does not mean a budget for your category. State what the source says and no more.
- Personal data. A named person in an announcement is personal data. Use role and company in the record; contact people only through lawful, published business channels.
- Volume. Ten signals on a Monday overwhelm a reviewer. Cap the daily queue and rank by lifespan.
Where KYN fits
KYN builds signal watchers and outreach agents inside the client's own cloud account. The agent writes a record with a source link and drafts one checkable first line, at about S$0.02 per email in a live insurance brokerage system. Outbound messages wait for a named person, and every action is logged with the actor.
The first 14 days are a review: which signals your team already watches, which sources you pay for, and who acts on a hit. A full build, including the signal monitors, ships in under 90 days. See sales systems and marketing systems.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most reliable buying signal for a small business?
A hiring post for a role that matches your product is the most direct, because it names a process under strain. Pair it with a second signal, such as a new office, before you contact the account.
Can an agent monitor LinkedIn for signals?
Check the platform's terms before you automate any collection. Company websites, registries, exchange announcements and government portals are safer sources, because they are published for public reading.
How soon after a signal should I make contact?
Within the signal's lifespan. For hiring, that is usually inside 30 to 60 days of the posting. Measure replies by signal age on your own data, then set the cutoff.
