By KYN AI Advisory Team — AI implementation specialists, Singapore
An AI voice agent works for short, structured sales calls: confirming a meeting, asking three qualifying questions, or following up a form. It struggles with open negotiation, noisy lines and speakers who switch languages mid-sentence, which is normal in Singapore, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Use it for narrow tasks, hand off to a person early, and test it on recordings of your own callers before you dial a single number.
When does a voice agent work for sales?
It works where the call has a fixed shape and a clear end. Three examples:
- Confirmation. "This is a call about your appointment on Thursday at 3. Can you still attend?" Three possible answers, each with a defined next step.
- Qualification. Ask for company size, timeline and the person who decides. Record answers, then book a person.
- Inbound after-hours. Answer, take the reason for the call, and create a task for the morning.
It fails where the call needs judgement: a price negotiation, an upset customer, or a buyer who wants a long conversation about their problem. Those calls belong to a person.
Why does timing decide if a voice agent sounds human?
On the phone, silence is information. A pause of a second after a question can sound like thought. A pause of three seconds sounds like a broken line. If the agent starts talking while the caller is still finishing, or waits too long to respond, callers hang up or start repeating themselves.
Three timing points to test:
- Response gap. The time between the caller finishing and the agent starting. Test with real callers, not office colleagues.
- Interruption. Whether the agent stops talking when the caller speaks. A voice agent that talks over people loses them quickly.
- Filler handling. "Hmm", "uh" and "lah" are not answers. The agent should wait, not treat them as the end of a turn.
We do not cite a number for an acceptable gap. It depends on the language, the line quality and the speech vendor, so measure it on your own recordings.
How well does it handle English, Mandarin and Bahasa?
This varies by vendor, model and accent. We do not rank languages here. Test the specifics:
| Test | What to check | |---|---| | Accent range | Singapore English, Indonesian-accented English, Hong Kong English | | Code-switching | A caller who moves between English and Mandarin, or English and Bahasa Indonesia, in one sentence | | Names and company terms | Chinese, Indonesian and Malay names; local place names; product terms | | Numbers | Phone numbers, dates and amounts said aloud in each language | | Dialects | Hokkien, Cantonese or Javanese words that arrive without warning |
Run 30 to 50 recordings of real calls from your own customers through the system. Score each call on whether the agent captured the right answer. Look at failures by language and by call type. If the agent fails more than your threshold for a segment, send that segment to a person.
Do not assume that a vendor's demo language list means the agent handles mixed speech. Ask for a test, not a claim.
What are the legal and consent rules?
Voice calls for marketing are regulated. In Singapore, the PDPC's Do Not Call Registry guidance governs marketing messages to Singapore telephone numbers. Check it for the exact scope and duties before any outbound campaign. Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia each have separate rules, so check the country of the person you are calling.
Rules to build in as code:
- a registry check before each outbound call where a registry exists;
- a recorded opt-out that stops all channels;
- a call-time window that respects local hours;
- clear identification of the business at the start of the call.
Whether you must disclose that the caller is automated depends on the country and is changing, so take legal advice. A safe design is to say who is calling and to offer a person on request.
How should you set it up?
- Pick one call type. Confirmation calls are the easiest start.
- Write the script as a decision tree. Each question has a defined set of answers and a next step. Anything outside that goes to a person.
- Set the handoff. On a keyword, a question about price, or two failed attempts to understand the caller, transfer to a named person or book a call-back.
- Log every call. Store the recording where the law allows, the transcript, the outcome and the actor.
- Review weekly. Listen to 20 calls. Count misheard answers and hang-ups in the first 15 seconds.
For the autonomy question, see the sales agent autonomy ladder. If connects are your problem rather than conversations, read why AI voice agents get low connect rates.
What does a sample call script look like?
Here is an illustrative confirmation call for a service business. It is a decision tree, so every branch has a defined end.
- Open (under 10 seconds). "Hello, this is the assistant for [Company], calling about your site visit on Thursday at 3. Can you still make it?"
- Yes. "Thank you. I will send the address by WhatsApp. Goodbye."
- No or need to change. "I can offer Friday at 10 or Monday at 2. Which suits you?" If the caller answers with a clear choice, book it. Otherwise: "I will ask a colleague to call you back today."
- Asks a question outside the script. "A colleague will answer that. May I ask them to call you at this number?"
- Asks for a person at any point. Transfer or book a call-back at once.
Count how many calls end in each branch after the first 50. A high share in the last two branches means the script is too narrow, or the list holds people who did not expect the call.
What should you measure on voice calls?
| Measure | Why it matters | |---|---| | Calls answered by a human | Separates list problems from script problems | | Calls past 20 seconds | Shows if the opening holds the listener | | Correct answers captured | Checked against the recording, per language | | Handoffs to a person | A rising share signals scope or accuracy trouble | | Complaints and opt-outs | The costly outcome; review every one |
Review the recordings of failed calls by hand each week for the first month. Transcripts hide hesitations and talk-overs that you hear in the audio.
Where KYN fits
KYN's live sales systems today cover outreach with a checkable first line, a reply desk and group benefits comparison for an insurance brokerage. We do not run a live voice-calling system. If you want one, the review in the first 14 days tests whether your call types are narrow enough and your recordings clear enough to justify it. Voice work, like all agent work, follows the same rules: named accounts, every action logged with the actor, and outbound messages and calls waiting for a named person.
A full build ships in under 90 days. See sales systems and security.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI voice agent speak Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia?
Many can, at varying quality. The question for you is how well they handle your callers, with their accents, names and mixed-language speech. Test with your own recordings.
Should a voice agent make cold calls?
We advise against it as a first use. Cold calls carry the highest consent risk and the lowest tolerance from the listener. Start with confirmations and inbound calls.
Will customers know it is an AI?
Many will notice, mostly through timing and phrasing. Say who is calling, keep the call short and offer a person. Check the disclosure rules for each country.
